Learning how to make a lava lamp is a great activity for kids and adults to do together as it provides a unique and safe way to decorate your little one’s bedrooms. The craft also doubles as a science lesson – teaching kids about density and chemical reactions!
In order to make your own lava lamp follow the easy steps outlined below that can be achieved by using a handful of common household items.
You will need:
- Vegetable oil
- Food colouring
- Small cup/container
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- 1L bottle
- Spoon
How to make your own lava lamp
1. Add the baking soda
Add three tablespoons of baking soda into your 1L bottle.
2. Add vegetable oil
Fill 2/3’s of your bottle with vegetable oil. It is important to make sure the oil rests on top of the baking soda and doesn’t mix with it.
3. Mix vinegar with the food coloring
In the other, smaller cup/container – add some vinegar and three drops of food colouring.
4. Sit back and watch
Lastly, slowly add the solution of vinegar and food coloring to the 1L bottle, and sit back and watch as the magic happens! Place either a phone torch or a flat torch underneath your bottle to light up the bottom in order to achieve that infamous lava lamp glow!
The process can be repeated using different food colouring options, or mix a few together to create a truly unique lava lamp colour that you won’t find in any of the shops!
